My best friend Susan just returned from a vacation in Maui and sent me an email this morning with some beautiful pictures she made yesterday just before departing for home.

Here is the Hawaiian monk seal. She’s a beautiful creature and she’s resting on Ka’anapali Beach. According to Susan, this is the first monk seal to come ashore on this beach in 12 years. It sounds as if she traveled quite a ways since Susan tells me they usually are found near the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.

Wow.

This sweet face also happens to belong to one of the most endangered seals in the U.S. I did not know this so I did a little google and found this link to some information on monk seals at The Wild Ones.

(Thanks Susan for giving me permission to use your photos.)
