The New York Times Sunday Magazine has a wonderful story on America’s highway road signs and the designers, Don Meeker (from Oregon - yay!) and James Montalbano, who collaborated to bring us the new look. I haven’t had a chance yet to read the whole story and so far, it seems a fascinating article of how successful design of even the most mundane of navigational tools can dramatically benefit our road experience. More importantly, it is a design solution that aims to keep us safer.
I enjoy reading about the process and history of typography and design of everyday things. I guarantee the next time you are driving, you’ll be looking at road signs differently. I know I will.
