Yesterday was the first day of my first class as part of the PSU Multimedia Certificate program. The class: Core XHTML.

Well, it never dawned on me that I would be learning a new language. Of course, XHTML is a new language (!). It just wasn’t one of the obvious ones I would have categorized under my list of “Languages to Learn” (French, Italian, Korean, Spanish, Chinese).

But this is exactly how Chuck Musciano and Bill Kennedy introduce HTML and XHTML in their book, HTML and XHTML: The Definitive Guide.

Languages are tough to learn and I think XHTML will be much easier than learning Chinese given the enormous community and the sheer repetition of seeing it and using it every day.

Plus, while there are requirements to post exercises and activities for everyone in class to see (it’s an online class), it isn’t quite the same as having to communicate in person. I only say this because I’ve been laughed at more than a few times for trying out a new spoken language.

XHTML seems much safer.

I think.

In the end, whether I get embarassed or not, I chose the right path. This little video, The Machine is Us, that the instructor suggested we watch was further confirmation I’m heading in the right direction.

That makes me feel real good.
